South Korean President Park Geun-hye called it a demonstration of "self-decimation" which demonstrated the "twisted carelessness" of pioneer Kim Jong-un.
The test was initially recognized as a 5.3 size fake quake near the North's known atomic test site.
Investigators dread it could be a stage nearer to having a usable atomic weapon.
